What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma affects the optic nerve, which plays a key role in sending visual information from your eyes to your brain. Over time, changes in eye pressure or blood flow can damage this nerve and impact your vision. Because glaucoma often develops without early warning signs, many people don’t realize anything has changed until vision loss has already occurred. That’s why routine monitoring is so important—even if your vision seems stable.

From medical treatments to your annual eye exam, we provide a wide range of services at Alma Optics.

How we monitor your eyes

Glaucoma monitoring focuses on tracking small changes in your eyes. During your visits, our Alma eye doctors will measure eye pressure, evaluate the health of your optic nerve, and assess your overall vision.

We also use digital retinal imaging to capture detailed images of the back of your eye. These images help us compare results from visit to visit, making it easier to detect changes and guide your care.

Who is At Risk for Glaucoma?

Glaucoma monitoring is important for many patients, especially because changes can happen without noticeable symptoms. Regular visits help us keep a close eye on your vision and respond early if anything shifts. Monitoring may be recommended if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with glaucoma
  • Have elevated eye pressure
  • Have a family history of glaucoma
  • Are over the age of 40
  • Have diabetes or other health conditions that affect eye health
  • Have noticed changes in your peripheral (side) vision

Our optometrist will guide how often you should be seen based on your individual risk factors and overall eye health.

Long-Term Monitoring & Support

Glaucoma care is built around consistency. At Alma Optics, we take a long-term approach—tracking your eye health over time and helping you understand what each visit means for your vision.

If changes are detected, we’ll walk you through the next steps and work with you to manage your care in a way that feels clear and manageable. Our goal is to help you stay informed, supported, and confident in your care.
